Throwback Thursday to when my students made super cool videos

Hi, my fellow "master procrastinators". As I have been receiving a lot of super belated questions on how to make the videos you are supposed to hand in on Monday, I decided to include an example from a previous year and some comments.

1) As you have seen, the video is a cooking programme like the ones in the Gourmet Channel where you must answer the 10 questions from "The Scientific Chef" WHILE COOKING. Please, add subtitles because sometimes the sound is not very clear. This example video is too long. Make yours between 5 to 7 minutes long.

2) The video IS NOT about the menu, which has to be handed in in a computer file following all the guidances on any practical work (A4 paper, references, cover, badge etc). The menu has to include the dishes you designed and the explanation on why you included those ingredients. (please, write the names of the different courses correctly)

3) The chart can be done in a real chart and photographed or digitally. Don't use charts from internet because the group that cheats will get an #InstantOne

Please, be creative! Quarantine is already boring and dreadful... I gave you a long time in the hope that you would make something really cool to make my day.

See you on Thursday at 10!!!

And a  #Challenge:
1) Which is the only diet (as a way of eating, not of losing weight) that has scientific proved endorsement?
2) What kind of food does it include? Why?
3) Why is it that any diet highlighted in yellow is bad for us? Why shouldn't we leave meat out of our dish???

Please, put the video, the chart and the menu in a folder in your drive and send me the link. Remember, please, that my gmail account is about to explode!

Plants Here, Plants There, Plants Everywhere (Lockdown Edition)

Hi people!! How are you? Me, again

Well,  I spent last weekend with the Master on Neuroscience online classes. (Yeah, I DO get bored, too!)

But on Saturday morning we talked a lot about... FOOD and BRAIN. The nutritionist that was delivering the class talked a lot about DIETS so I remembered you!!!

We also discussed how a misunderstood study (or a totally prepared marketing campaign) made us believe (and use and teach) the benefits of the FOOD PYRAMID for a long time.

but...

So, which balanced meal plan should we use???

I'm also leaving here two great TED talks:

1) my favourite chef JAMIE OLIVER. Although it's a bit old, his concepts are absolutely correct!!

2) How healthy would we be if we could have a green urban farm?

As Jamie Oliver says, the problem with young people and vegetables/fuits is that they don't know where veggies come from and the enormous work it takes to keep them alive. So, we are going to grow our own plants!!
For Monday, August 31st , I would like to see all your CD germination (one per person) photos !!!
These are the instructions:

But I don't want everybody to use the same kind of seeds, so  people in

GROUP 1
Castro Neto- Verruno- Frizza- Padula- Ghio-Rodriguez- Allocati- Korec- Elliff- Mendoza-Galli- Guerrero will be using VEGETABLE SEEDS (the ones you have at home such as pumpkin, bellpepper, tomato) (no Beans, please!)

*  GROUP 2
Giustinian- Guerreiro- Gomez Abritta- Cracogna- Lopez Marquez- Cabral- Mininni- Coccaro- Montero- Calderón-Prola- Bortayro will be using FRUIT SEEDS (the ones you have at home such as lemon, apple, orange)

* GROUP 3
Santi- Arias- Wainer- Aquilani- Zalazar- Montes- Barbará- Pappalardo- Arrua- Prieto Duro- Amettler will be using potatoes, onions, carrots, lettuce or sweet potatoes to obtain a plant. You will have to check your fridge to find a potato, an onion or a carrot that already has roots or sprouts.(like the ones in the picture)

I'd like you to send me pictures of your CD boxes every 15 days!!!

It will be a kind of HUNGER GAMES. Instead of districts, each of you will represent your plant group. The students who take care of their plants properly and whose plant makes it to November 30th will get a 10. The ones who don't...  The plant group with the most survivors will get an extra 10! #MayTheOddsBeEverInYourFavour

Let's become #UrbanFarmers!!

PS: This is an old picture of me with my grand uncle for you to see how much I have always loved plants (up to the point of trying to eat a tree hahaha)

It's (not) all about the diet

Hi, my beloved students!!! How are you doing? How is this quarantine treating you? How many kilos have you gained so far??? XD
Well, the title of my post is connected to a very famous song by Meghan Trainor. Do you know remember it? What is it about?

Yes!! Food, diets, stereotypes and all the concepts we have been discussing in class lately.

First of all, we discussed our distorted models. Sometimes, Photoshopping is not the best solution!!!
http://www.buzzfeed.com/elliewoodward/the-most-wtf-celebrity-photoshop-fails-of-all-time

I'll post a million super interesting videos for us to discuss in upcoming classess!! ( In the same groups you formed for the "Origin of life"  I would like to see a summary on these videos before Thursday August 27th)

1) This is Sandra's Amodt's video.

2) This is a great video on the Psychology of food based on the article written by Diego Golombek

3) Now, Let's discover why we are hungry!

>

4) Do you want to lose weight (but scientifically)??

5) Can I be a celiac?

Lat class, we also discussed the two meanings of the word DIET

1.
the kinds of food that a person, animal, or community habitually eats.--> WESTERN/EASTERN DIETS

2.a special course of food to which a person restricts themselves, either to lose weight or for medical reasons

I would like to discuss with you some of the TRENDY DIETS people follow these days. For each diet, I would like to know:

*The notion behind it
*The restrictions they apply
*Creator of the diet
*Positive and negative points
*Calory consumption per day

Let's divide this into 8 groups

VEGAN DIET: Allocati- Elliff (Intensivo 2) Castro Neto- Frizza  (Intensivo 1)
VEGETARIAN DIET: Giustinian- Lopez Marquez (Intensivo 2) Ghio-Mininni (Intensivo 1)
DETOX DIET: Gomez Abritta- Montes (Intensivo 2) Montero- Prola (Intensivo 1)
KETO DIET: Pappalardo- Galli (Intensivo 2) Santi- Wainer (Intensivo 1)
FASTING Prieto Duro- Amettler (Intensivo 2) Zalazar- Aquilani (Intensivo 1)
DR RAVENNA'S DIET Arrua- Barbará- Cabral (Intensivo 2) Arias- Bortayro- Calderón (Intensivo 1)
PALEO DIET: Cracogna- Guerreiro (Intensivo 2) Cóccaro- Mendoza (Intensivo 1)
ALKALINE DIET: Guerrero- Korec- Rodriguez (Intensivo 2) Padula- Verruno (Intensivo 1)

With the collaboration of all the groups, you will make a chart  for THURSDAY, AUGUST 27th comparing them.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1OHEAV1wXEO7QD37FugUSzsx9AS8wiZGQ/view?usp=sharing

As a part of this unit is about food and diet, I'm posting the questionnaire on the Scientific Chef for you to start working.

( you can download it from the link blow)

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Az9VoTeL5xq_eFcpEbCtyipQ2E0qPkJO

The deadline will be Monday September 14th

Each group will have to answer ten assigned questions as a COOKING SHOW VIDEO (Gourmet, or Utilisima) no longer than 10 minutes, prepare a written menu and a digital chart with the content of sugar or salt in a certain group of food.(there are two examples in the questionnaire)

GROUP 1
Allocati- Elliff - Lopez Marquez - Castro Neto- Frizza

Questions 1-11/ Menu: Healthy breakfast for a student/ Chart: sugar content of common sweets we eat

GROUP 2

It's Time for an ART ATTACK

has always been one of my favourite shows for children. I used to watch it with each and every one of mine... Yes!!! The show is 30 years old!!
This is the time of the year when my students have an art attack and create their cell mandalas. (I don't know if you remember the CD cells stuck on the lobby windows at school)
These are some examples made by my 3rd year students in the past years

                                                 Chocolate cell!!!!!!

Due to this lockdown, that won't be possible. But, let's make the most out of this situation. Let's make it bigger!!! The idea is this: I'd like you AND YOUR FAMILY to design a plant or animal cell with things you have at home. You can draw it, you can build it, you can make an installation in the garden, you can cook it... as I did with my students the previous years

(If we are lucky and we return to school, we will bake great cell pizzas together...)

There is a tiny detail: This is a FAMILY CELL CONTEST with a very HONOURABLE JURY:

*Pablo Manzano
*Natalia Parracia
*Rosana Giambini
*Carola Abril
*Enzo Ferrari
Every project will have a mark. However, the jury will decide which family gets an extra 10 for creativity!!! The submission closes on July 9th

So... for you to be able to create the types of cells and all the different organelles, I'm  including here a superb video on the differences between ANIMAL/PLANT cells. It was done with a graphic tablet :)

If you want two see two more videos in the same series , here you have each type of cell:

PLANT CELL

and ANIMAL CELL

>

The preview pdf of the powerpoint will be in our classroom

Do you want to see some more videos?

1) Cell structure

And a funny song for you to remember cells even in your dreams!!!

I would also like to share with you this article from "El gato y la caja" after some editing, of course!

LTA

A tu bisabuela, a tu abuela. Y a tu mamá también.

Talking about Evolution,homework... and a challenge!

Hi, people!!! How was your week so far ??? The name of my post is a pun with an 80's song by Tracy Chapman

I've been thinking about your next assignments and I had a great idea. For you to review everything we have been discussing so far, I would like you to:

1) Write a journal entry (as if it were in your personal diary) of around 220 words on how your life changed since you were a carbon molecule floating in the atmosphere till you became a human being. Remember to include all the theories on life.
I'm including a link for you to download the .doc version of the journal for you to write on.
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1NpR2UP1mr-TDZx3gN6DzXiDGTUJA2Wv4

The due date will be May 28th.

I'm uploading my powerpoint presentation on ORIGIN OF LIFE for you to revise the concepts.

You can also watch the videos on my previous post  https://biologics32020.blogspot.com/2020/04/and-god-said-let-there-be-light.html

2) For Monday 18th  you will have to mail me your tweet, explaining in 280 characters why I chose the phrase that sums up the unit

Here you have a link to a tweet generator for you to prepare yours.
https://www.tweetgen.com/create/tweet.html

and last but not the least..

3) Who are we? Are we clones of ouselves? Can we be alive & dead at the same time? I would like you to watch this super cool video and answer some questions on its content. You have time to answer it until May 20th at midnight. (it's my first attempt with Edpuzzle so it will have its problems. Be patient with me, please)

And in case anyone wants a 10, you can answer my new #CHALLENGE on species that acompanies this post

on Instagram and on Facebook. Remember that you can leave your answers on the three social media options:

And God said: "Let there be light"

Well, first of all I'd like to thank you for joining me in this experience. As a welcome greeting, I'm sharing with you a song from one of my fav series  that represents my feelings

Time is slipping away,
Away from us so, stay,
Stay with me I can make
you glad you came

And now Let's get it started!!! For next class (Monday, April 6th at 10:00 for intensivo 1 and 14:00 for intensivo 2), Intensivo 1 should separate into 3 groups of 4 and 1 of 5 students and Intensivo 2 in 3 groups of 4 and 2 of 3 people to answer the questionnaire on the history of LIFE!!!! As the information is not in the booklet, you can use the internet but you need to include your references (websites you take the info from). Remember the guidelines on presentations that we talked about in our first class!!!

Video Number 1 for question 4

And here you have some more videos that can help you understand some of the concepts

History of EARTH in 5 minutes by my beloved NEIL DEGRASSE TYSON

History of life on Earth

And now, let's answer

And if all these weren't enough my first challenge:

This morning I woke up with a craving for Mexican Guacamole, made of AVOCADO. Then I remember that scientists say that Avocados are an example of evolutionary anachronism, why? What is it??? Any other examples? First correct answer gets a 10!! (without copy and paste!) (You can answer here, or below the posts on IG or on Facebook)

In case of doubts, please, remember, you can contact me in different ways (not at weekends or after 22:00)
