And God said: "Let there be light"

Well, first of all I'd like to thank you for joining me in this experience. As a welcome greeting, I'm sharing with you a song from one of my fav series  that represents my feelings

Time is slipping away,
Away from us so, stay,
Stay with me I can make
you glad you came

And now Let's get it started!!! For next class (Monday, April 6th at 10:00 for intensivo 1 and 14:00 for intensivo 2), Intensivo 1 should separate into 3 groups of 4 and 1 of 5 students and Intensivo 2 in 3 groups of 4 and 2 of 3 people to answer the questionnaire on the history of LIFE!!!! As the information is not in the booklet, you can use the internet but you need to include your references (websites you take the info from). Remember the guidelines on presentations that we talked about in our first class!!!

Video Number 1 for question 4

And here you have some more videos that can help you understand some of the concepts

History of EARTH in 5 minutes by my beloved NEIL DEGRASSE TYSON

History of life on Earth

And now, let's answer

And if all these weren't enough my first challenge:

This morning I woke up with a craving for Mexican Guacamole, made of AVOCADO. Then I remember that scientists say that Avocados are an example of evolutionary anachronism, why? What is it??? Any other examples? First correct answer gets a 10!! (without copy and paste!) (You can answer here, or below the posts on IG or on Facebook)

In case of doubts, please, remember, you can contact me in different ways (not at weekends or after 22:00)

  2. First of all, an evolutionary anachronism is a term which is referred to explain the survival of some species which survived after the disappearing of other species to whom they were linked, for example, the big animals who consumed fruits and seeds. The avocado is an Evolutionary Anachronism because it comes from the Cenozoic Era, where mammals who are already extinct ate the avocado for survival. Nobody knows how the avocado still continues to this day, but some intervention should have happened, because all the animals who ate avocado on that era are extinct. Other examples are the papaya and the Osage Orange, among others.

  3. To start with, evolutionary anachrism is a term to apply to characteristics of living organisms that are better described because they have been favorably chosen in the past because of coevolution with other biological species that have since become extinct. In the case of avocados, at the beginning of the Cenozoic period when megafauna, including mammals, migrated, the plant reached its evolutionary peak. The fruit attracted these very large animals that would then eat it whole, travel far distances and defecate, leaving the seed to grow in a new place. However, those animals disappeared about 13.000 years ago and around that time, those places lost a lot of its diverse. So, the avocado may have disappeared too, but it didn’t. Even after this major shift, the wild avocado still requires the same method of seed dispersal, which makes it somewhat of an evolutionary anachronism. Other examples are: papaya, cherimoya, sapot, among others.

  4. The avocado is a very good example of evolutionary anachronism since it is a very old fruit, that used to be eaten by specific animals, the majority of them mammals that nowadays are extinguished. Through the excrement that they defecated, they left seeds of the avocados in different places. But as I said earlier, today these animals do not exist, so you will be wondering how we continue eating the fruit. We continue eating avocados thanks to the farmers of old times that planted the first trees of avocados.

No, the embryon did not get to term as they stopped the experiment. They did as they wanted to prove that a genetic defect can be repaired in human embryons and also because they wanted to give us a better aging. Yes, they are crossing the. A genera si a taxonomic rank compromised of species with characteristics in common. A King dom is the second highest division so the living beings in this taxonomic rank have less un common than the ones that are in the family taxon. A family is a taxonomic rank between the genera and order. It is more precise than order but less than genera. Species is a group of organisms that are able to interbreed and to create no barren offsprings. Also they share a genetic heritage. 4. A chimera is a organism with two genetically distintc types of cells. Fantastic creatures are example of this. It not the same as hermaphrodite because it as organism that has both sexes. For example, It could be a plant, a human being etc.

  6. 1) The embryo did not get to term because experiment was stopped a month later it started.
    2) They did this to create organs in pìgs, so that they could be given to people in need of an organ transplant
3)Genera: It is a group of organisms that in turn can be divided into different species. -Kindoms: Each one of the great divisions in which natural beings are considered distributed, by reason of their common characters.
-Families: Is a systematic unit and a taxonomic situated between order and genera.
-Classes: It is a taxonomic category situated between the edge or division and order.
-Species: Set of people or things similar to each other for having one or more common characteristics. They are crossing two different species
4)A chimera is an individual whose body is composed of cells that are genetically distinct, while a hermaphrodite is an animal or human with both reproductive systems.
